Forgotten Memories…

Julia Murakami’s work in progress series of photographs is a visual exploration into the dingy, surreal world of the fictional Joyous Circus. In her photographs she portraits the denizens – whimsical hybrid creatures– of this lost and forgotten place in an intimate way. Seemingly frozen in a single moment, the portrayed appears strangely familiar in these stage-like settings of visual flashbacks. Hidden references to her former works such as the white poodle in the curtain from the OUAT series, are playfully intertwined “cameo appearances” of the protagonists that connect the story in her collages. The Joyous Circus is a place where forgotten memories find a home, reconstructed as a fairy tale.

Julia Murakami “Forgotten Memories of the Joyous Circus”, 2016 is a work in progress series. Now and then when I return from the Joyous Circus, I try to capture my experiences in my new works.
